Jenny Hocking's magnificent biography Gough Whitlam: A Moment in History is the first definitive account of the life and career of the former Labor Prime Minister. Sally Neighbour's The Mother of Mohammed tells the story of an Australian woman's extraordinary journey into jihad. The short-list will be announced on November 9.
