Keeping our books on paper with Print-on-Demand

Melbourne University Publishing keeps over 350 titles available as physical books through Print-on-Demand, with more titles from our backlist being added every month.

What is Print-on-Demand?

Print-on-Demand (POD) is a printing technology and business operation where copies of a title are not printed until an order is received, allowing customers to purchase single or small quantities of a book that is otherwise not available in print.

Where can MUP’s Print-on-Demand titles be purchased?

Our Print-on-Demand catalogue is already available to order through your local bookseller and through online retailers. We are also working to make them available on our website as soon as possible.

Pricing for Print-on-Demand

Our Print-on-Demand (POD) books are more expensive than our warehouse stock. This is because of how they are made.
With POD, we print books only when an order is received. This means there are no bulk discounts or wasted inventory. The slightly higher cost per book reflects the flexibility, instant availability of our backlist catalogue and reduced environmental waste compared to overprinting, which often leads to the pulping of unwanted book stock.

Trade orders for Print-on-Demand

If you are a bookseller or retailer, please contact your sales representative or email us for trade orders. Please be aware that Sale-or-Return is not available for POD products.

Why can’t I find an old MUP title available as Print-on-Demand?

There are many reasons why a title has not been made available in Print-on-Demand, including:
  • the title is still in stock at the warehouse, and is available at the more affordable trade price
  • MUP no longer holds the rights to the title
  • the title is a full-colour book, which is not a compatible print-on-demand format for MUP at this time

If you need help finding a copy of an MUP title, please email us.
