ANU Experience: Mark Scott in conversation with Chris Uhlmann

Mark Scott will be in conversation with Chris Uhlmann about Mark's new book, On Us, in which Mark draws on his years as a journalist, ABC Managing Director and, now, Secretary of the NSW Department of Education, to question the fragmenting of the media and the implications of what he calls "the greatest real-time experiment conducted on humanity" with the arrival of the smartphone.

How do we step outside our own echo chamber to understand others? What are we losing when we share fewer and fewer national moments? The new media is enabling despots and disempowering democracy. So when every opinion seems to matter equally, On Us offers a few more on choice in a concentrated media world and asks why more information often means less insight.

Mark Scott is the Secretary of the NSW Department of Education and has a distinguished record in public service, education and the media. Initially a teacher and education policy adviser, Mark enjoyed a long career in journalism. He was Editor-in-Chief of Fairfax newspapers and then Managing Director of the ABC from 2006 to 2016.

Chris Uhlmann, the Nine Network Political Editor, is one of Australia's best-known political broadcasters. Chris has had a long association with the ABC, including as presenter of national AM radio and Political Editor for The 7.30 Report, ABC News, and ABC News channel. In August 2017, Chris joined Channel 9 as the Chief Political Editor, succeeding Laurie Oakes. He is co-author with Steve Lewis of the bestselling Secret City trilogy, the basis of the highly successful TV series.
